Senecio serpens ‘Blue Chalksticks’, recently changed to Senecio mandraliscae, is a striking succulent known for its upright, bluish-gray stems that resemble chalk sticks, giving it a unique appearance. This drought-tolerant plant is low-maintenance and thrives in sunny spots, making it an excellent choice for both indoor and outdoor gardens.
- Size: Grows up to 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) tall and 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) wide.
- Hardiness: USDA zones 9–11. Can tolerate temperatures as low as 25°F (-4°C) for short periods, but it should be protected from frost.
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to full sun. The more sunlight it receives, the bluer the leaves will become. Indoors, place near a south- or west-facing window for best growth.
- Soil: Requires well-draining soil. A cactus or succulent mix works well, but you can improve drainage by adding perlite or sand.
- Watering: Use the "soak and dry" method—let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Water about once every 1–2 weeks during the growing season and reduce watering during winter dormancy.
- Temperature: Thrives in 65–75°F (18–24°C). Protect from frost and cold drafts, as it’s sensitive to freezing temperatures.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years if the plant becomes rootbound or outgrows its pot. Use a container with good drainage to prevent waterlogging.
- Indoor Care: Place in a location with plenty of bright light. If grown indoors, ensure proper ventilation and avoid humidity buildup, which can lead to rot.
- Outdoor Care: In warmer climates, plant in full sun for the best color and growth. In hot areas, provide some afternoon shade to protect from intense heat.
- Maintenance: Remove any dead or damaged stems to encourage new growth and maintain a tidy appearance. Senecio ‘Blue Chalksticks’ can be propagated by taking stem cuttings.
- Fertilizing: Fertilize during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer. Feed sparingly, as too much fertilizer can cause leggy growth.
